Practice Good Oral Health Before It’s Too Late
Our mouth does a lot of tasks for us. We eat, talk, communicate, drink, and eat using our mouth, but despite all these a lot of people neglect its care. Because of all the important things that it can do, we should prioritize oral care.
Unlike any other parts of our body, we can immediately see and smell neglected oral care. The most effective practices in oral care include brushing your teeth three times a day, flossing your teeth, using mouthwash, and scheduling dental check-ups at least twice a year. If oral care is not practiced regularly, you might be at risk for Gingivitis and Periodontitis.
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums. It is the initial sign prior to any gum disease but not all gingivitis is related to gum disease. Plaque can also cause gingivitis, bacteria build up in plaque causing inflammation. This is the reason why it bleeds when you brush your teeth. The gums are irritated because of the plaque, but teeth are still intact in their socket and no tissue damage has occurred.
What is Periodontitis?
It is the state wherein the gums pull away from the teeth forming pockets. This area would then collect debris from whatever you ate and infect your gums all the more. The body’s immune system detects the inflammation and fights it off, the plaque will continue to grow and spread near the gum line. The bacteria that was able to grow in the pockets of the gums and the body’s immune system starts to break down the bones and the connective tissue holding the teeth. The pockets deepen as the disease progresses. As this worsens tooth becomes loose and tooth loss occur.
If I don’t have a plaque, I can’t have periodontal disease, right?
Plaque is the primary culprit for periodontal diseases but there are other factors that lead to periodontal diseases.
- Hormonal Change.
Just like what women go through when they are pregnant, it can also happen during puberty or menopause. The change makes the gums more sensitive and gingivitis can occur.
- Weakened Immune System.
Our body’s defense system let it heal itself and fight off bacteria before it can even spread. If it is weakened damage might have occurred already, leaving us not even noticing it.
Nicotine in cigarettes weaken the cells and tissues of the gums holding the teeth, therefore, making it more prone to bacteria.
- Poor oral hygiene habits.
Avoid the growth of plaque in teeth. You can have your dentist check your teeth regularly. Ask for an ideal schedule of check-ups!
